Anvil

The macOS app

The native macOS app: manage applications, services, logs and PHP from a window and the menu bar.

Anvil also comes as a native macOS app with a menu bar icon. When it launches, it starts Anvil, the enabled services and the applications set to start with Anvil. Build it from source as described in Getting started.

  • Applications list with search, a filter by type (only the types you have, with counts) and running only, sorting by name or date modified, your own groups (Favorites first), a section per parked folder, linked folders, and extra linked domains under their application. Add applications with the + button: New Application, Add Folder of Applications (park) or Add Application Folder (link). The lock next to an application shows a closed lock for HTTPS; an open lock appears on hover for HTTP only. Click it to switch.
  • Finish setting up bar while a one-time step is missing: Local domains, Standard ports (addresses without a port number) and HTTPS certificate, each asking for your password, plus PHP.
  • Application panel with Start, Stop and Restart for apps with their own server, quick buttons for browser, Finder, Terminal and editor, and these tabs:
    • Overview: type, runtime, folder, web root, disk and services in use. Services attached to the app also show as chips under its address.
    • Git (repositories only): branch, changes, last commit, remote, and a button for your git app (GitHub Desktop, Fork, Tower… or any app you pick in Settings).
    • Logs: every log file of the app side by side (Laravel, Symfony, app output, PHP-FPM) as readable entries with level filters, search, follow, expandable context and stack traces. Files over 100 MB open only when asked.
    • Packages: framework versions and one search over each package manager's dependencies (Composer, npm, pnpm, yarn, Cargo, Go, .NET) with the version the lock file pins; development packages and scripts are folded away, and newer versions are checked on demand.
    • Resources: disk breakdown with clean-up, processes and services.
    • Settings: type, PHP version and php.ini settings, or start command, port and "Start with Anvil".
  • Services next to Applications in the sidebar, see Services.
  • Settings window:
    • General: site folders, launch at login, Dock icon, theme, editor and terminal, and Addresses: domain, the address applications answer at and HTTPS for new applications.
    • PHP: install and remove versions, set the default, php.ini defaults for all applications.
    • Languages: install and remove Node.js, Go, Rust, .NET and Python.
    • Storage: Anvil's own footprint and every application's size.
    • Shortcuts and About.
  • Menu bar menu: Open Anvil, status, Start/Stop, Restart, Default PHP Version, Show Anvil Logs in Finder, Settings and Quit. Applications and services are started and stopped in the window.
  • Serving button (top right of the window): stopped, it starts Anvil; serving, it opens a menu with how many applications are served, Restart and Stop.

Closing the window keeps Anvil running in the menu bar; quit from the menu bar icon. The app applies changes right away.
